What is a Datil Pepper?

The Datil pepper has a long storied history. First brought to the United States from Minorca (a Balearic Island belonging to Spain),  by the Minorca monks in 1777. These monks settled in St. Augustine, Florida and began to cultivate the Datil peppers to use in their cuisine.

The Datil pepper is a local favorite in St. Augustine and for many years was considered their best kept secret. With its hot yet fruity taste, the Datil pepper grew in popularity, its acclaim was heralded up and down the South Eastern Coast. However, many local growers are hesitant to share their seeds or the secrets behind growing them.
